Freyr Friðriksson Transitions to Chairman as Ólafur Karl Sigurðarson Assumes CEO Role at KAPP

Kópavogur, Iceland, January 6, 2025

KAPP ehf., a leading technology company serving the global food processing industry, today announced that founder and owner Freyr Friðriksson is transitioning from Chief Executive Officer to Chairman of the Board, effective January 9, 2025. Ólafur Karl Sigurðarson, who has served as Deputy CEO since August 2024, has been appointed Chief Executive Officer.

The leadership transition follows a landmark year of expansion for KAPP. In 2024, the company doubled both its workforce and revenues, driven by strategic acquisitions and accelerated international market development.

Founded 27 years ago by Freyr Friðriksson and his wife Elfa Hrönn Valdimarsdóttir, KAPP has grown from a startup into an international provider of refrigeration solutions, equipment manufacturing, and services for the seafood industry, aquaculture, poultry production, and other industrial sectors. Recent strategic milestones include the acquisition of KAMI Tech Inc. in Seattle, enabling U.S.-based manufacturing, and the acquisition of all assets and patents from the bankruptcy estate of Skaginn 3X, significantly strengthening KAPP's high technology capabilities.

"I founded KAPP with nothing but determination 27 years ago, at just 23 years old. This is not a departure," said Freyr Friðriksson. "I am transitioning to the role of Chairman to oversee the company with a broader strategic perspective. Ólafur Karl is ready to lead KAPP forward, and I have complete confidence in his ability to build on our momentum. His experience positions KAPP well for continued growth, both domestically and internationally."

Under Freyr's leadership, KAPP has systematically expanded its product portfolio and service capabilities, with favorable market response across both domestic and international markets.

Ólafur Karl Sigurðarson brings extensive industry experience to his new role. He spent nine years at Marel, where he held senior leadership positions, including Executive Vice President of the Fish Division and Managing Director of Marel Iceland, and served on the company's Executive Team.

"I am honored by the trust placed in me to lead KAPP into its next chapter," said Ólafur Karl Sigurðarson. "Freyr and his family have built a strong company and a respected brand through resilience, vision, and long-term commitment. Having grown up in a family-run business myself, I understand the importance of preserving that foundation while continuing to innovate and evolve. We are coming off an exceptional year marked by major investments and operational improvements. Integrating multiple companies under the KAPP brand while maintaining stability within each operating unit is a significant undertaking, and our team has executed this transition with great professionalism. The year ahead will focus on building on this strong foundation, deepening customer relationships, optimizing our expanded operations, and continuing our growth trajectory. I look forward to working closely with KAPP's talented team and our customers worldwide.”

KAPP to Exhibit at Seafood Processing Global 2026 in Barcelona

KAPP will exhibit at Seafood Processing Global 2026, taking place 21–23 April 2026 at Fira Barcelona Gran Via in Barcelona, Spain. Seafood Processing Global is held alongside Seafood Expo Global, and the 2026 edition has been announced as the largest in the event’s history.

At the event, KAPP will present its broad portfolio of chilling, freezing, and processing solutions for the seafood industry. KAPP’s positioning centers on “Chilling, Freezing and Processing” and on helping customers maximize product quality, increase yield, and improve overall efficiency through advanced refrigeration and food processing solutions.

Visitors to the KAPP booth will learn more about a range of technologies for onboard and onshore seafood operations, as well as for aquaculture applications. These include OptimICE® liquid slurry ice systems, IQF Tunnel Freezers, Non-Pressure Plate Freezers, RoteX solutions, tub handling systems, ValuePump®, and other food processing technologies in the KAPP portfolio.

OptimICE® is designed to rapidly cool fish and maintain a stable, low temperature throughout the cold chain, helping preserve freshness and quality. KAPP’s freezing and processing portfolio also includes systems developed to improve yield, support gentle product handling, and enhance operational efficiency across seafood processing environments.

Seafood Processing Global brings together equipment, packaging, and service suppliers from across the international seafood sector, while the broader event attracts seafood professionals from around the world. For KAPP, the show is an important opportunity to meet customers, partners, and industry professionals in one place and discuss practical solutions for today’s processing challenges.

We look forward to meeting visitors at Booth 3BB401-E in Barcelona and discussing how KAPP can support stronger product quality, better yield, and more efficient operations across the cold chain.
